چکیده

A large number of embedded wireless systems must handle complex and time-varying computational and communication workloads. Further, a significant number of these systems support real-time applications. Most of the existing energy management studies for such systems have focused on relatively simple scenarios that assume deterministic workloads, and only consider a limited range of energy management techniques, such as Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS). Our paper addresses these deficiencies by proposing etworked embedded systems nergy management ynamic Modulation Scaling ynamic Voltage Scaling a general purpose probabilistic workload model for computation and communication. To account for the importance of radio energy consumption, we also analyse Dynamic Modulation Scaling (DMS), an often overlooked method for energy management. We define several energy control algorithms, including an optimal combined DVS–DMS approach, and evaluate these algorithms under a wide range of workload values and hardware settings. Our results illustrate the benefits of joint power control algorithms.

Ci-p: Enabling Pocket-scale Data Management Research

The world’s 2 billion smartphones and 4 million apps have become a large part of most people’s computing experiences. Most apps need to persist structured data, a task frequently performed using an embedded database such as SQLite. These are heavily used, with Android smartphones generating an average of more than two SQLite queries per second [48] per phone. Unsurprisingly, mobile app usage of...

Energy-Aware Probabilistic Epidemic Forwarding Method in Heterogeneous Delay Tolerant Networks

Due to the increasing use of wireless communications, infrastructure-less networks such as Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) should be highly considered. DTN is most suitable where there is an intermittent connection between communicating nodes such as wireless mobile ad hoc network nodes. In general, a message sending node in DTN copies the message and transmits it to nodes which it encounters. A...

Randomized Algorithms and Probabilistic Analysis in Wireless Networking

Devices connected wirelessly, in various forms including computers, hand-held devices, ad hoc networks, and embedded systems, are expected to become ubiquitous all around us. Wireless networks pose interesting new challenges, some of which do not arise in standard (wired) networks. This survey discusses some key probabilistic notions – both randomized algorithms and probabilistic analysis – in ...

Application-Specific Hardware Design for Wireless Sensor Network Energy and Delay Reduction (ODES6)

Battery-powered embedded systems, such as wireless sensor network (WSN) motes, require low energy usage to extend system lifetime. WSN motes must power sensors, a processor, and a radio for wireless communication over long periods of time, and are therefore particularly sensitive to energy use. Recent techniques for reducing WSN energy consumption, such as aggregation, require additional comput...

Slow Down or Sleep, That Is the Question

Energy consumption has become a major concern for all computing systems, from servers in data-centres to mobile phones. Processor manufacturers have reacted to this by implementing power-management mechanisms in the hardware and researchers have investigated how operating systems can make use of those mechanisms to minimise energy consumption. Much of this research has focused on a single class...
